Understanding God – By Lei

48 hrs after we took Jaiden home from the hospital, we had to rush him back in for treatment for severe Jaundice

It was so difficult to see all the nurses drawing blood from Jaiden’s little body. The poor boy simply did not have enough blood to fill the testing tubs required for the lab tests. The nurse had to squeeze his arm and leg just to get the last drop of blood. For a boy who weighs less than 6 lbs, the test tubes looked like an Olympic size swimming pool waiting to be filled. Jaiden cried murder as he was rudely awakened by a big needle. He cried like never before, it wasn’t an “I am hungry or I wet my diaper” kind of cry. It was a cry for help, to be rescued from the most painful experience of his young life. I simply held Jaiden’s head and repeatedly said “everything is okay Jaiden, Daddy is here… Daddy loves you…”

People always told me “once you have a child then you will understand God more” Perhaps this is true. Perhaps the way I felt when I saw people stabbing Jaiden with needles is the way God feels when he sees us. To God, he knows the exact reason for the needles, for the pain, and for the tests. It is all for our benefits. However, to the clueless boy who just wanted to sleep, it was the biggest disaster of his life. Jaiden probably didn’t know he had Jaundice and needed to be rushed to ER for treatment. Jaiden for sure didn’t know he was in the best hospital in town so he can be healed. All of the “horror” was actually for him so he can continue to grow to be big and strong.

Coming home - by Lei

On my most recent trip from US back to China, I walked out the plane with a great sense of “ahh… It is good to be home… I can’t wait to see my wife”

This feeling is a dramatic shift from how I felt just 2 years ago after landing in China.

2 years ago, landing in China meant coming to a new place that I now “have” to call home.  I had left my friends, family and even Diana back in the US.  Left a place that I was comfortable and familiar with for a new land of uncertainties.  I was in Shanghai all alone so I can start a new job, find a new apt, find new friends and even find a place to buy groceries.

When I landed two years ago, I remember a strong sense of nervousness as emotions swelled up in me.  I was no longer a tourist. I didn’t have a set date and a plane ticket to bring me home (US).  For strange reasons, a tourist visa and a return plane ticket had offered a security blanket that I hadn’t realized.

I am so thankful for my last two years in this new place I now call home.  Strange how fast things change in just 2 years.  I am eager to introduce my son to his new home.
